What Is a Myocardial Infarction (MI)?

A Myocardial Infarction (MI) is a heart attack. The American Heart Association reports that nearly “every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a heart attack.” There are two types of heart attacks: NSTEMI and STEMI.

• NSTEMI: This occurs when there is a partial blockage of an artery that results in a reduction of oxygen to the heart. An NSTEMI will present itself as a decreased ST segment on the patient’s EKG.
• STEMI: This occurs when there is a full blockage of an artery that results in a complete lack of oxygen to the heart. A STEMI is more intense than an NSTEMI and can be fatal. A STEMI will appear as an elevated ST segment on the patient’s EKG.

Symptoms

When most people think of a heart attack, they think of chest pain. Yet, a heart attack can cause a number of unexpected symptoms like,

• Chest Pressure
• Jaw Pain
• Neck Pain
• Stomach Pain
• Arm Pain
• Nausea
• Difficulty Breathing
• Sweating

Women and men often experience different heart attack symptoms. Women usually show signs of nausea and difficulty breathing. On the other hand, men’s most prominent symptom is pain.

Causes

A heart attack can happen to anyone, but there are factors which can increase your risk.

• Preexisting Conditions (Diabetes, Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, Etc.)
• A Family History of Heart Attacks
• History of Cardiac Conditions
• Poor Diet
• Obesity
• Age
• Lack of Exercise
• Smoking
• Alcohol
• High Cholesterol
• Stress
